About Orlické Mountains National Nature Reserve

Situated along the border between the Czech Republic and Poland, the Orlické Mountains National Nature Reserve protects a significant portion of the Orlické Mountains (Eagle Mountains), part of the Sudetes mountain range. This reserve is characterized by dense coniferous forests, granite formations, and unusual peat bogs, forming an ecologically valuable habitat. The landscape is a mix of gently rolling highlands and steep ridges, with elevations reaching up to approximately 1,115 meters at Velká Deštná, the highest peak in the range. Historically, the area has a long tradition of forestry and small-scale farming, but its natural environment remains largely intact due to conservation efforts initiated in the mid-20th century. Visitors are drawn to the reserve for its extensive network of hiking and cycling trails that traverse a variety of habitats, including moss-covered woodlands and meadow valleys. Notable landmarks within the reserve include lookout towers that offer panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, as well as preserved traditional mountain cottages. Aside from summer and autumn hiking, popular recreational activities include cross-country skiing and snowshoeing during the winter months. The reserve is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts eager to observe species such as capercaillie, lynx, and a diversity of resident and migratory birds. Its rugged yet accessible terrain, combined with cultural heritage elements like wooden churches and mountain huts, makes Orlické Mountains National Nature Reserve a compelling destination for outdoor adventurers and nature lovers alike.
